Citizens have come together across the country to remember 24 months since the Hamas-conducted attack on 7 October 2023, as negotiations proceeded in the neighboring country over a conclusion to the conflict in Gaza.

The assault resulted in over 1,200 people killed and 251 others abducted back to Gaza as captives. It was the uniquely most fatal day for the Jewish community since the Second World War.

Israel responded by beginning a military offensive in Gaza which has claimed more than 67,000 people, based on figures from the area's Hamas-administered health ministry. Its numbers are considered trustworthy by the UN and other global organizations.

"The aggressive enemies have caused great damage, but they have not defeated us," Benjamin Netanyahu remarked on that day.

He also promised to "accomplish all the aims of the war: the release of all the captured, the destruction of the Hamas administration and the promise that Gaza will not create a threat to Israel".

Remembrance Gatherings Across Israel

The national leadership postponed state remembrance events until mid-October - after the end of the Jewish High Holiday season - but gatherings still occurred across the country on Tuesday.

A remembrance service for the relatives of people killed in the Hamas attack was organized in the coastal city. Organized by the victims' relatives, it was televised across Israeli TV networks.

A period earlier, a silent tribute was respected throughout the country.

Peace Talks in Egypt

Meanwhile, both sides' negotiating teams met in the North African Red Sea resort of the negotiation venue for a continuing round of mediated discussions to discuss the provisions of the agreement.

A prominent representative involved in the negotiations indicated that an evening round of mediated discussions commenced at evening in Egypt.

The official explained the morning session ended without tangible results, amid disagreements over the proposed Israeli retreat arrangements from Gaza and over safeguards Hamas demands to guarantee Israel does not recommence hostilities after the initial stage of the deal.

He commented that the talks are "tough and have still not deliver any real breakthrough," but pointed out that facilitators are working hard to reduce the gaps between the both parties.

Key Matters in Negotiations

  • A lasting ceasefire
  • The exchange of the hostages still detained by Hamas for inmates from Gaza
  • The removal of troops from Gaza
  • Plans for relief supplies provision
  • After-conflict administration of the region

Public Reaction

In the city's public square previously, 29-year-old a woman - whose sibling endured the assault on the Nova music festival, where hundreds were murdered and many more were taken hostage by Hamas gunmen - told: "No place appears as home now and until every captive come back none of us will be secure."

"Once we see everybody home again, we can breathe anew. Then we can commence heal," she continued.

Near Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu's official dwelling in Jerusalem, people assembled to demonstrate their support for the families of the hostages. Israel says 48 remain in confinement in Gaza, 20 of whom are believed to be surviving.

Protester Atalia Regev stated: "We must do any agreement necessary for the captives to be released. But we really want promises that we will be protected."

Opinion polls now frequently demonstrate that approximately seventy percent of the population desire the conflict to conclude in return for the liberation of the abducted.

Gaza Situation

At the area of the music event, grieving people gathered to pay their respects.

From that location, the boom of military attacks and artillery could be noticed just a short distance away in Gaza, where witnesses reported the severe Israeli bombardment persisted.

In Gaza City, attacks were noted in the dawn of that day in the western neighborhood, Rimal and zone neighbourhoods and in the eastern district of Sheikh Radwan, as well the camp to the northwest.

"Once the night falls, the dread arrives with it," evacuated urban resident Emaan al-Wahidi, whose 17-year-old son was died by an Israeli air strike previously, explained.

"My family are afraid of the bombings. Throughout the evening we are lying together, holding each other, especially my smallest child who puts his face on me throughout the night."

"Continuously we check the updates to see developments. And I'm worried that this ceasefire will not be finalized and that the fighting will come back to us."

Humanitarian Situation

The medical facility in the urban area said it had taken in the bodies of several people by the midday, including several who died in an Israeli attack in the south part al-Sabra neighbourhood.

Nasser hospital in the southern urban center of Khan Younis indicated additional dead people had been transported. An individual was died by Israeli forces while looking for help to the southern area, medics said.
