The Mayor-Elect confirms his intention to make his home in the iconic Gracie Mansion
NYC's next chief executive, Zohran Mamdani, has confirmed to take up residence in the iconic Gracie Mansion, vacating his rent-controlled apartment that sparked debate in his election bid.
A Traditional Abode
Built in 1799, Gracie Mansion has served as the primary dwelling for nearly all New York City mayors since the post-war period.
Yet, Mamdani, for whom affordable housing is a key policy, did not confirm this decision immediately following his electoral win in November.
"My choice was based on the security of my family and the importance of dedicating my complete efforts on implementing the agenda for affordability New Yorkers voted for," the Mayor-Elect declared in a statement.
Leaving Astoria
His home was in the Queens borough of Astoria, a district known for its vibrant immigrant communities and international dining.
"To Astoria: many thanks for exemplifying the best of New York City," he noted.
"Although my address will change there, it will forever remain within me and my efforts as mayor," he added.
Campaign Controversy
In his race for mayor, Mamdani linked his central policy – halting rent increases – to his own housing situation.
However his critics, including ex-governor Andrew Cuomo, challenged Mamdani for occupying the apartment although he is from a well-known family.
Previous Exceptions
Not every mayor have decided to stay at Gracie Mansion.
Michael Bloomberg, the billionaire entrepreneur, chose to live in his personal mansion on Manhattan's Upper East Side for his three terms, which wrapped up in 2012.
Instead, Bloomberg said he believed it ought to be a space for public city functions, and championed an extensive renovation of the older mansion.
A Vastly Different Setting
Upon taking up residence at Gracie Mansion near his swearing-in on 1 January, he will be surrounded by surroundings a stark contrast to his humble Astoria home.
Adorned in butter yellow paint, forest green window covers, and pristine railings, Gracie Mansion is an ornate structure with views of the East River.
Inside, the first floor of the Federal-style mansion is decorated consistent with the home's original era.
The compound, which is said to has five bedrooms, also has enhanced security to safeguard the mayor and his family.
Supernatural Speculation
Some residents have claimed that Gracie Mansion also has supernatural lodgers.
Chirlane McCray, the spouse of ex-mayor Bill De Blasio, informed the press that doors occasionally opened and shutting on their own, and the floors emitted odd sounds.
Former Mayor Eric Adams was even more convinced. "It doesn't matter what anyone says," he stated in 2022. "It has spirits in there, man."
Affordable Housing Lifeline
His former home is rent-stabilized, which means the city imposes caps on how much building managers can increase rent each year.
Tenants consider these apartments valuable lifelines as the housing expenses exceeds what many can afford.
Data indicated Mamdani his rent was $2,300 each month for his apartment.
Per figures from the real estate platform Zillow, the median rent for a one-bedroom apartment in New York City is $3,500 a month.
