Jurgen Klopp says a return to manage Liverpool is theoretically possible.
The German coach, who stepped down from Liverpool in 2024, has suggested that a future comeback is an option. The 58-year-old, after a transformative nine-year spell that included continental glory and the Premier League crown in 30 years, currently occupies positions as head of global soccer with the Red Bull group and in an advisory capacity to Germany's league body.
Fan Sentiment and His Frank Comments
They secured the Premier League last season, but many fans who revere Klopp would welcome the notion of his potential comeback. Speaking candidly, he explained to Steven Bartlett: “I declared I won't manage another team within the country. Therefore if then it’s Liverpool...absolutely. In theory, it could happen.”
“Being 58, so I might decide later on, it's uncertain. Do I have to make the decision today? Then I will not coach again. Luckily, I don’t have to do that. I can just see how things unfold.”
What Would Lure Him Back?
Pressed on what circumstances must arise to draw him back to the touchline, he confessed he feels no immediate pull for a comeback. “It's unclear to me, I love what I do right now,” he said. “No longing for management; I don’t miss standing under bad weather through long matches; I don’t miss going to media briefings multiple times weekly or having 10-12 interviews a week.
“No nostalgia for the changing area as a dressing room, yet sharing a meal alongside the squad enjoying conversation, I appreciate that. Success was frequent thus frequently a very good mood around the place. I still have the captain's chuckle ringing in my ears for example.”
Commending Arne Slot
He spoke highly of the current boss, crediting him due to the changes that took the title last term. Liverpool have lost four consecutive matches in all competitions after a summer spending spree, yet he dismissed the idea that it might signal the start of a downward turn.
“[Liverpool have] a phenomenal forward such as Wirtz, critics will regret if spoken against. An outstanding player. The French striker, incredible player. They have a strong well-judged squad. Fans shouldn't fret over the club, they'll bounce back.”
Emotional Tribute for Diogo Jota
Klopp also spoke emotionally regarding the passing of the Portuguese star, whom he brought in in 2020, along with the consequences at the club. Jota died tragically in a vehicle collision alongside his brother in July.
“Can you substitute a person like him? It’s not about his on-field talent, it’s the guy he was. I struggle to conceive the dressing room absent his presence. I find it difficult to discuss regarding this. A profound tragedy for all the boys as well. Nobody at Liverpool will ever use it for poor performances but it is the situation. Being in that space where his spirit remains. Handling this on a personal level is difficult. Overwhelming.”
