Jailhouse Shock: The FormerPresident Jair Bolsonaro Confronts Time in Prison

He contested the legal system and the legal system won.

A couple of months after getting a twenty-seven-year sentence for seeking to “destroy” Brazil’s political system, former president Jair Bolsonaro at last appears destined for incarceration.

Anticipated Incarceration

The convicted instigator – who's been under residential detention in his mansion while a set of legal procedures and petitions proceed – is broadly anticipated to be imprisoned in the near future, amid growing rumors that he will be sent to a well-known maximum security penitentiary.

Previous Statements on Inmates

During Bolsonaro’s four-decade public life, the conservative former paratrooper displayed little mercy for the country's jailed individuals.

“For what reason must we give those scoundrels a good life?” he previously wondered. “They ought to simply be screwed, full-fucking-stop. That's my view.”

In another instance, Bolsonaro proclaimed: “Should you not wish to wind up behind bars, all you have to do is not rape, abduction or theft.”

Incarceration Facility Speculation

However the prospect of Bolsonaro himself ending up in the Papuda prison high-security prison in Brasília has shocked allies, several of whom this week visited the facility in an apparent effort to prevent the supreme court from transferring him there.

Senator Lucas, a politician from Bolsonaro’s political party who was part of that quartet, said he anticipated the 70-year-old politician to be jailed in the next 10 days and feared his location could be Papuda.

The senator argued Bolsonaro’s severe intestinal problems – the outcome of a near-fatal knife attack during the 2018 presidential political campaign – implied it would be hazardous to keep the ex-leader there. “His [health] situation is extremely serious. He cannot to manage if they move him to Papuda … It will be dreadful,” said the senator, who also worried about cramped cells and the quality of prison meals.

When inspecting Papuda, Lucas noted observing cells accommodating four dozen prisoners: “That is virtually one square metre per inmate.

“We talked to the prisoners and they protest, unsurprisingly, of the awful cuisine,” continued the senator.

Backers React

He is not the lone figure voicing opinions prior to the ex-leader's anticipated incarceration.

Authoring in a major newspaper, one more backer, the former cabinet member Fábio Wajngarten, deplored the “harsh” conclusion to Bolsonaro’s “spotless” public service and asserted Brazil was about to experience “the greatest political injustice in its history”.

“It is an wrong that gnaws the spirits of millions of Brazilians,” he stated.

Varied Public Response

That may be correct considering the considerable following Bolsonaro maintains on the conservative side. Yet his anticipated incarceration has also warmed the feelings of millions individuals who believe he deserves to be imprisoned for planning to block the incoming president from assuming office – and even conspiring to have him killed.

The lawmaker, a representative for the incumbent president's allied group, said: “Nobody wishes Bolsonaro to be placed in a dungeon. No one wishes Bolsonaro to be sent in solitary confinement. Not a soul wants Bolsonaro not to be fed or for him to have to rest on hard ground. We wish him to receive respectful handling – but dignified care while incarcerated. He cannot persist being his personal jailer for his whole life.”

Otoni was struck by how Bolsonaro allies, who have for a long time applauding the tough conditions of prisoners, had unexpectedly become aware to their entitlements. “Just now has the far-right – which has repeatedly claimed that human rights should not be for offenders – chosen to tour a jail to discover what circumstances are truly like,” he stated.

“Bolsonaro is a criminal,” Otoni insisted, but that did not mean he earned “humiliating, demeaning treatment”.

Likely Jail Environment

In spite of rumors that Bolsonaro could be sent to Papuda, which currently contains about fourteen thousand detainees, his more likely location seems to be a nearby jail for police officers and other “unique” inmates referred to as Papudinha (Little Papuda).

Its cells are far more pleasant than those in the main prison, although nevertheless a far cry from the luxury Bolsonaro had while residing in the impressive leader's home, about a short distance away.

According to reports, the accommodation Bolsonaro could likely reside in in Papudinha is about 260 square feet – about the size of vehicle spaces – and contains a 12 sq metre WC with a shower and a 12 square meter balcony. “The ex-president might be authorized to have a television and even a small fridge in his room as long as they were supplied by his relatives,” sources indicated.

Partisan Responses

Senator Lucas denounced the rumoured plan to send the ex-president to Papuda as “an act of revenge” on the part of the presiding magistrate who presided over Bolsonaro’s proceedings and will determine his outcome in the {
