Information Available Concerning the Victims of the Bondi Beach Terrorist Incident

No fewer than 16 lives lost their lives and over 40 were hurt when attackers opened fire at a Hanukah celebration at Bondi Beach, a tragedy local police have called a terrorist attack.

As of the newest reports, officials have announced the death toll remains at 16, encompassing one of the suspected attackers. Additionally, 42 people with injuries were admitted to hospital.

Those who died are still awaiting publicly named, but authorities state their ages range from 10 and 87 years old.

Below are the individuals who have been named so far.

Eli Schlanger

London-born clergyman Eli Schlanger, 41, was the first to be publicly identified.

Reportedly a father-of-five, he was the associate rabbi at a local Jewish cultural centre. Relatives and acquaintances remembered him as “vivacious, energetic, full of life and a very warm outgoing person who loved to help people”.

“How is it possible that a joyful rabbi who went to a beach to spread happiness and light, to make the world a better place, meet his end in this way?” a relative remarked.

Schlanger and his wife celebrated the birth of their newest son just a few months ago.

Alexander Kleytman

Alexander Kleytman was also among those killed, according to his wife.

She described the moments leading up to the attack, explaining they had been standing together when the gunfire erupted. “He shielded me because he wished to be near me,” she said.

The couple were both survivors of the Holocaust, having endured unspeakable terror in their childhood. They had later relocated to Australia from Eastern Europe.

Dan Elkayam

The French authorities have confirmed that French national Dan Elkayam is among the dead.

Publicly, the Foreign Minister expressed that France shared the grief of his family, the Jewish community, and the Australian people.

“This cowardly attack is a new, tragic manifestation of a disgusting rise of antisemitic hatred that we must eradicate,” the statement read.

One Child

A child who was taken to the Sydney Children’s Hospital is among those who had died, authorities stated.

One Israeli Citizen

An Israeli citizen was among those killed during the attack, as per multiple sources referencing the Israeli government.

Those Injured

From the 42 people taken to hospital, many are still receiving treatment, with five in critical condition. Those hurt comprise two police officers who attended the scene.

A casualty is a member of the public who attempted to intervene to confront one of the attackers. Called a local hero, he sustained bullet wounds but is in stable condition in hospital.

Arsen Ostrovsky

One of those wounded is Arsen Ostrovsky, a human rights lawyer. Reports indicate he was injured and is receiving treatment in hospital.

He wrote, he recounted the incident as an “horrific scene,” but also praised the actions of those who rushed to help. He stated he felt it was a “miracle” he survived.

Evan Zlatkis

Evan Zlatkis, a community director, was also injured in the attack. He described he listened to “a large number” of shots.

“I thought it was something less lethal, but it’s gone into my own skin and into my leg,” he stated. “I’ve been shot myself. They bandaged me up. I’m ok.”
