Antony Price, Celebrated for Designing for Iconic Acts Like Bowie and Duran Duran, Dies at 80.
The British designer Antony Price, the influential UK-based designer behind some of the most iconic looks worn by David Bowie, Roxy Music, and Queen Camilla, has died at the age of 80.
He was celebrated for his defined forms and dramatic aesthetics, such as the light-hued ensembles that appeared in the pop-rock group Duran Duran's seminal music video for "the song Rio".
"Remembering him as a 'visionary' and a 'kind, intelligent and razor-witted friend,' the group posted a remembrance on social media."
His passing follows shortly after he presented his newest line in London, his first in more than 30 years. The performer Lily Allen showcased a dress evoking the notorious black velvet "so-called 'revenge dress'" made famous by Princess Diana.
A Pioneering Career
Hailing from Yorkshire, where he was born in 1945, Price moved to London during the sixties to attend the prestigious Royal College of Art.
Shortly after his graduation, he began designing clothing for men at Stirling Copper and was responsible for the form-fitting, button-fly pants that rock legend Mick Jagger famously wore during the band's Gimme Shelter tour in 1969.
He founded his own label in 1979 and staged his first fashion show a year later. The show opened with creations worn by model Jerry Hall, who later wore the wedding dress Price created for her for her nuptials with Sir Mick Jagger.
Partnerships with Stars
A frequent collaborator of David Bowie, Price was the mind behind the memorable jacket the star wore for his "the song As The World Falls Down" music video in 1986.
His signature ability to merge menswear and womenswear along with his masterful technique in shaping sculptural silhouettes made him a "genuine original," according to the UK's fashion authority.
During the nineties, he began working on pieces for Camilla, Duchess of Cornwall, which included a number of outfits for her US tour after assuming the title.
With a vocation that covered half a century, Price staged what would be his last show in London recently in partnership with the design house 16Arlington.
