A Pig's Tale: Hog Named Six Seven Spared by Miami Dade County Leader.

It might not have been at the identical stature as sparing Thanksgiving turkeys, but the Miami-Dade County mayor conducted a ceremonial pardon event this week by ceremoniously saving the life of a swine named Six Seven.

Daniella Levine Cava carried out the annual tradition at the Cuban-style Latin Cafe 2000 in the heart of Miami’s iconic Little Havana neighborhood.

“This animal is guiltless. She deserves this act of mercy. She has committed zero crimes,” declared Levine Cava in a speech with clear references to the sheer volume of pardons issued from the start of the beginning of a second term in office.

“Except perhaps for eating half a dozen apples per day,” the mayor added. “I hope she experiences a long and happy life without fear.”

This ceremony, simultaneously observing and challenging the region’s Hispanic tradition of consuming swine during the holidays, was created to mirror the traditional fowl clemency at the White House.

The animal, provided by a Coral Gables firefighter, was christened after the current slang trend of young people exclaiming “six-seven” – originating from a rap song lyric – often without clear purpose. The craze became so pervasive that a prominent word reference recently named “6-7” its top term for the year.

A Peaceful Retirement

The pardoned swine is now set to enjoy its days at a rural sanctuary “away from grills and cookware”, according to the event’s official press release.

“The annual pig pardon has become a beloved tradition to kick off the end-of-year celebrations,” said the cafe owner, in a particularly upbeat message.

“It represents the spirit of Miami: happy, multicultural, and based in heritage that unite the community. Annually, we are delighted to mark tradition and kindness in a way distinctively Miamian.”

Attendees enjoyed a vegetarian menu of spinach fritters and cafecito as they toasted the pig's pardon.
